Your First Physiotherapy Assessment: What to Expect

A practical guide to the conversation, movement review, explanation, and next-step planning that may form part of a first physiotherapy visit.

Start with your concern and goals

A first visit usually begins with a conversation about what has changed, how long it has been present, relevant medical guidance, and the activities that matter to you. You do not need to choose a treatment before the assessment.

Review relevant movement and function

The clinician may review movement, mobility, strength, walking, balance, or a relevant task according to your presentation and consent. Not every test is appropriate for every person.

Discuss findings and options

Findings should be explained in understandable language. Recommendations may include education, activity modification, exercise, suitable hands-on care, progress review, or referral when medical assessment is more appropriate.

What to bring

Bring relevant prescriptions, discharge instructions, imaging reports, referral guidance, and a list of medicines when they are relevant. Wear clothing that allows the movement or area of concern to be reviewed comfortably.
